About the event

Soil is the foundation of all we are able to do on the farm and in our lives. It is the fundamental resource that creates the food that nourishes us. You might be familiar with the phrase, "you are what you eat" and I am here to tell you that what you are starts with soil!

This knowledge share covers soil science basics and the must-knows of agroecological stewardship.

Joy Youwakim is a soil scientist and agroecologist who operates Saboon Maazeh, a farm and soap workshop in Chester, NY dedicated to SWANA heritage preservation. She has a masters of science in agroecology from the University of Texas Rio Grande Valley, where she completed her thesis work on heavy metal contamination in agricultural soils. She has 6 years of work experience as a soil scientist, where she has travelled all over the world to different farms, conducting experiments to improve soil health.
